Paradigms are shifting

PM1 – What’s happened to my paradigms?? (“I don’t know? Where did they go?)

I started the accounting program at VCC two years and two months ago thinking that I would take this program and get a bookkeeping job to help me pay for university and have a job that would pay slightly over minimum. However I found out that through VCC I could achieve an applied degree and CGA within four years ( 2 years 2 months class at VCC, directed field studies upon graduation, and 2 years work experience to achieve designation). Not only this but my parents said that they would not pay for university but they would pay for the VCC program! So I decided to stay with the VCC route.

My choices for staying with VCC at the time were probably not the best at the time I didn’t ever want to be an accountant, and Information Technology was something that was not exactly a subject matter that interested me. But as I said earlier my parents were paying for it, and like most parent and child relationships, they have a substantial amount of influence over me. So I found myself in a program that I told myself I didn’t really like and that it would lead me to a career that I didn’t really want. This was two years and two months ago.

Now, I am very happy that I decided to take this program. I have begun to develop a great interest in the area of accounting and finance. I have also realized IT is not only interesting but very valuable in today’s market place. This shift in ideas took place over the course of the years at VCC. I have begun to read further into the areas of finance and economics on a personal level and found a great interest in economic policy and financial planning. I have also found that these are areas that deeply interest me and would love to find a career relating to these subject matters.

All in all, over the two and a half years at VCC I have completely changed my paradigms. This shift was unexpected and was certainly not deliberate. However this change I feel was a positive one and will only benefit my for the short and long term (unless I have another paradigm shift of course;-)).
